I've got a Hotpoint WD51 washer/dryer.
The dryer stopped working years ago...now i want to fix it.

The dryer element:

shorts and I have to remove the 4 connectors to it in order for the washing machine to work and not drop the RCD on the consumer unit.

I believe the dryer stopped working after my wife overloaded it with clothes and used it for a very long time.

Is it quite likely that the element has failed or is it usually something else ?

if you have removed the connecters and the washing works then yes thats what you need a new element
