How to secure badly split cottage beam.

We were thinking metal plates screwed through from floor above and injected resin. Maybe should get a structural engineer to advise?
 
FWIW, might be better posting this in the BUILDING section so the experts there can give you advice.

A couple of bolts through it (and recessed) then use fibreglass paste to fill the crack. Will be as good as new. Fibral by U-Pol is very good. You can get it at Halfords.

Thanks. So not bolts with plates? Except that would look ugly :(

You can use big washers and inset them so that when you either fill over them or fit wooden caps you don't see them.
