Is it ok to put in loft boards on these beams?

Hello, I have a quick question about boarding a small area of the loft for storage. Is it ok to board on the beams like in picture (1) or should I be boarding over the higher beams running the other way like in picture (2). Somebody said I should go over the higher beams and put stilts in-between to support the boards as this would allow more insulation. I am not too worried about insulation as it will only be a small space but I just want to be sure it is usual to board over the beams as picture 1. Thanks for your advice.

If you’re not worried about insulation, do it as per picture 1. My loft has been like that for 20+ years.
