I ask this because the overflow pipe is leaking and I can't see a problem with my cold water tank

they are separate so you cant be poisoned if they mix

probally the ball cock, bend the pipe slightly so it closes a bit sooner

I've tried that - only ask because the overflow leaks even when I haven't used water so I'm assuming it's to do with the central heating - the water that's leaking is slightly warm too.

whaen water heats it expands, can you bend even more so not so much water in system

or adjust ball cock so water about an inch below overflow pipe

Not neccessarily. You need to get into the roof and either trace the dripping overflow or check the level in the two tanks. One will obviously be up to the overflow pipe.

If the ball-cock washer is damaged then bending the arm will only be a temporary releif, you will need to get the washer replaced.
