Is ther only one company that can connect me to the grid?

In the north west of england, I've a quote from Electicity NorthWest to connec tmy newbuild to the grid. It's a fairly hefty £2300, but in fairness they do have to dig up quite a chunk of road

It got me thinking; is it a competitive market? Is there someone else I can call to come and splice me into the mains?

How about if you dig the trench yourself? - or sub contract the work to somebody who knows where the other services are in the ground (that is quite important!).
