Hi,

Can anyone tell me if they think this is artex or is it woodchip? Really worried as looks like a bit has broken off on the corner of one of the pics attached.

Thanks

Paula_34, good evening.

Yes that has all the appearance of being Artex.

Any idea how old? Pre-1999 / 2000 yes that material can contain Asbestos.

To cut a long drawn out story short, If you are concerned about any Asbestos Content, get it tested, there are loads of on-line addresses that you can send a scrape sample to.

As the Artex appears to have been over-painted [on what would appear to be numerous occasions] as it is it can be considered "safe" if left alone.

Hi Ken,

Thanks for replying. In the middle picture it has broken off in the corner Ian this not then disturbed?

Paula_34, Hi again.

OK we are now in the land of what if?

Artex can and does contain Asbestos, the Asbestos it contains is as low as trace elements to no more that a few % of what is called "White Asbestos" White asbestos is the least "nasty" of the Asbestos types.

if you are in any way concerned about the broken area of Artex, simply cover it up with sticky tape.

If you do opt to send a sample of for test? get a hold of some wall paper paste.
Smear this wet paste over the area you want to test.
Scrape of a sample of the Artex below the wall paper paste.
Place the sample in a plastic bag.
Place that bag inside another plastic bag.
Ensure both are sealed completely.
Post to your chosen test facility.
Imperative that you clearly mark what location you took the sample from.
it is advisable to obtain a sample from each Artex location.

What the professionals do is to [as above] cover the scraped area with sticky tape.

Use a face mask when undertaking the above. The wall paper paste will prevent any escaping dust to get into the house.

Hope the above assists.

Ken.
