kitchen sink gurgles loudly and spits out water

Our kitchen sink randomly gurgles loudly for a few seconds and once I was actually in the kitchen when this happened and saw that on the regular drain side (not the disposal side) water was spitting upward then going back down the drain when this gurgling sound occurs. What's wrong?

its a back flow. have you got some thingelse running / emptying at the time when this happens?

The reason it does happen is because further down the pipe is a partial blockage* and when some thing is emptiying the water can nopt get out fast enough so it flows back up the pipe


* or the pipe is too small for a new appliance you may have had fitted
