So, electric showers have pull-cord switches as well as their own on/off arrangement. Does it harm a shower to leave the pull-cord in the on position? Our shower seems to be dying, as in not heating the water, and we tend to leave the pull-cord on, but are the 2 related?

No it won't do any harm to the shower to leave the isolator on. Assuming it's an 'instantaneous' type that heats cold mains water, then the shower has an integral switch that turns the heating elements off when the shower unit itself turned off. The shower won't consume any electricity when it's not in use (unless there is a light on it somewhere)
Having said that turning the isolator of any electrical item off when it's not in use is not a bad idea, in case a fault develops.

You can but not advised as stated in the instructions.
This is what happened to a triton while left on when not in use due to a motor fault when owner was out.
Best pull the cut-out every time we go out, then.
