Loft Boarding: Type of Timber Required for Cross Joists?

Hi,

I am about to board our loft with tongue and groove chipboard boards. I need to raise the boards so that they don't compress the existing insulation so I intend to install 2x4" timber runs at right angles to the joists spaced 50cm apart and then lay the board on that.

What sort of timber should I be using, does it need to be kiln dried, treated, CLS? I really have no idea.

Any help appreciated.

Anything will be fine.
You may want to reconsider your spacing distance though, normally I would expect the loft panels to be either 1.23mm of 2400mm in length. So would space out according to those measurements. So I would be thinking closer to 400mm spacings. It is generally best to board out from the loft hatch in to the loft.
