middle of the night...

and the radiators start kettling and I can hear the boiler pump going on for two minutes before it goes off.
The central heating is off.

What could be wrong? Some sort of back flow from the hot water system?

Any advice would be appreciated.

ok but this does not seem to happen at the same time every day.
is it on a timer?
 
The better boilers dont run the pump spin them at exactly 24 hours. However its unlikely to be that as most do not do that until 24 house after the boiler was last used.

It could also be a DHW preheat if its some makes of combi boiler.
