the reason to mount rads under windows is that is where you get air cooling and falling down the window surface.. doesn't matter how good your double glazing is..

the rads heat the cold air and cause it to rise instead.. this slows the inevitable convection current that would arrise if the rad was on an internal wall and keeps a more stable and even room temperature..

Who told you that pile of *******s...... Its widely believed but *******s all the same.

Heat leaves buildings thro walls & windows as well as roofs, using the heat efficiently is the by word these days. keep ya rads away from areas that hemorrhage heat, that boys & girls is windows & outside walls (I'm not bothering with the gob smackingly obvious others) Having a radiator behind the sofa ain't a big deal ...... The heat is in the room, which is where you want it...... Not zooming out of the window making its way to hyperspace...... When Noah was a lad this was as bloody obvious as it is now....

All windows, whether dg or not, are a natural cold spot.

It is best to heat this natural cold spot then the rest of the room will be evenly heated.

If you position the rad opposite the window, then even if it is big enough then if you sit next to the cold spot you will always feel the chill.

that's what i said..

looks like a myth to send to mythbusters for testing...


with insulation in and on the outside walls ( foam and foil backed plasterboard.. ) and a reflective surface directly behind the radiator, the heat loss through a wall would be minimised..

good quality DG with a 30mm air gap and "pilkington K" glazing minimises heat loss through the window..
