I am installing 3 connected smoke alarms and want to chase walls etc... in preparation for electrical work.

So

(1) Can the three smoke alarms be put onto a simple new radial circuit?
(2) What cable/fuse should be used?

yes

1mm

but the norm is to feed them off the lights.
With them being on their own mcb they can be turned off

so which do you preffer, smoke alarms present but turned off or live wires hanging from the ceiling where someone has ripped them down?

the only reason public buildings have smoke alarms is because of the government and insurers breathing down thier necks, householders are far more removed from this (private homes are not inspected except when notifiable building work is being done) and so will do whatever is nessacery to disable troublesome smoke alarms.
