Hi folks,

So we had a new drains laid in the garden, the ground was soft with rain afterwards and the grass was just starting to come back when disaster struck. An invasion of the bovine variety - about 10 cows wandered into our garden off the road, roamed around for about forty minutes and then wandered off up the road.

You can imagine the results.

So I filled some of the holes with compost, but it's a slow going (and relatively expensive).
Since the ground is still soft, would a garden roller be a better job to even out the ground and remove the hoof marks?

put some garden soil under cover and let it dry out so it is crumbly.

If it is stony, sieve it.

spoon it into the hoofmarks with a garden trowel and beat it down well. you may need to smooth them again in spring when they settle a bit.

If you have a lot, you can spread it around and use a lute or the back of a rake, to spread it, but it must be very dry and the grass very short to work. You can add some grit or coarse sand if your soil is heavy.

Why isn't the farmer's insurance paying for the damage his animals caused?
