Noisy end of spin cycle

I have a whirlpool estate washer that is about 5 years old. It will spin fine, but at the end of the spin cycle, it bangs loudly as it slows down. I sounds like Jack brakes on semi trucks!! We opened the lid and watched it as it slowed, and it seems that the basket inside bumps slightly up while it is doing this. My hubby said it almost looks like whatever is turning the basket during the spin, stops suddenly and the basket bumps while it slows down.

What might make it do this? It just started, and I really don't have money for a new washer.
