Got a Gledhill Boilermate 2. On top of the main tank is a small tank with a ballcock system in it. Ever since I shut off the water to fix a radiator, this small tank is forever refilling, 24 hours a day and its noisy. Its keeping me awake at night.

What the hell have I done and how do I fix it?

Found this description of boilermate so guess its the FE tank I'm on about:

Gledhill Boilermates....
Boiler provides heat into flow and return pipes with three way valve and pump as normal. Output of three way valve is cylinder (heatstore) or CH. If Heatstore needs heat threeway valve sends heat to store. If CH needs heat and store is full three way valve can send heat from store to CH. If store is low three way valve sends heat to CH and store. The function of the pump and three way valve is controlled by PCB.
Now for the DHW part. This is a seperate area with own pump and on early models own PCB. Turn on DHW tap, flow detected by flow switch. DHW Pump starts to send heat around heat exchanger mains cold goes thro other side and heats. Exit sensor detects water temperature and controls speed of pump to keep DHW down to safe 57c temperature.
No mains water goes to cylinder hence no need for pressure vessel etc. Heatstore has small FE tank on top for boiler as normal.
Good technical support from Gledhill. Also good manuals. Min problem with the system is setting up boiler to store. Boiler must be set to MAX. Setup tunes store to boiler output so that boiler doesnt ever overheat.

Forget that - it's the main tank, not the small one above.....sorry about that.

So same question applies - how do I stop the noise?

The problems with these thermal store type, the system is often crammed into airing cupboard so its impossible to get to the problem.I'm afraid most plumbers don't understand how the system work so they often mis-diagnose the problems.Try looking at www.heatweb.com for expert advice and supports. Also try and think what you could've done e.g. shutdown valves somewhere or are the radiator valves open etc....

Hi 07,
I'm not sure what noise you've got from your description. I take it it isn't the cold storage tank but the boilermate itself. Did you adjust your boiler stat when you carried out the work on your rad? Boilermates are designed to work with low output boilers so they require that the boiler stat is set to max. What did you need to do to the rad and what controls/valves did you touch?

The noise is like there is someone peeing into a metal bucket 24/7.

H attempted to renew an olive on a rad valve so shut off the mains supply as well as the cold feed into the Boilermate. The Boiler itself was never touched.

Its as if the tank is constantly refilling.
