We moved into a taylor Wimpey newbuild a few years back. One of the issues I have which has come to a head due to an accident in the home is the oven placement.

The builder has mounted the oven in a floor to ceiling kitchen unit directly behind the kitchen main access door. If the oven door is only slightly open and someone entres the kitchen, the entrance door hits the oven door before swinging around 30 degrees.

My wife was taking out the roast on sunday and I walked into the kitchen. The door hit and flipped the oven door up which knocked the roasting tray out of her hands spilling hot fat over her chest.

The builder says it is all withing spec as it's only Hobs that can't be placed behind a solid door.

Whe I used to fit house electrics, I have would questioned choosing this as a kitchen plan because it's an accident waiting to happen.

Are there any regs about safe posisions for built in kitchen appliances?

The general train of thought would be that the equipment should be installed as per manufacturer instructions.
I would either contact the manufacturer or have a word with your local building controls officer, they may be able to expand on some of their guidelines.

Thanks for the advice.
I'll look up the installation instructions and if the builders contractor kitchen fitters haven't followed them in a safe manner I'll pursue this further.

I am a qualified electrician by trade.
Some times it's quite bewildering the way people and even some bona fide kitchen designers, plan kitchens.
If I can have an input at an early stage of kitchen design and install, I offer views if allowed on the best way to plan and make provisions for the electrical appliances.
There some no nos like cookers next to other appliances and hobs near doors or even under windows, socket outlets near hobs and sink/drainers.
You try and plan the kitchen as logically, practicably with safety a major concern as you can.
It's evident to me that the cooker is not located neither in a practical space nor has safety been taken in to consideration.
But as far as the regulations concerning the electrical side, it would be very difficult to pick one requirement or regulation that the position of your cooker is in breach of. You could pick out some requirements/regulations that are a little ambiguous though.
