Through our kitchen we have 2 metal tie bars which have been painted repeatedly what is the best thing to strip them with.
I have got a hot air gun but the gap is only about 3 inches from the roof and I think this is too close for safety.
Can anybody recommend a good chemical stripper that would be suitable

Your right, its always risky when using heat anywhere near a roof space, try nitromors paint stripper, or, if you get get your hand in, have a go at stripping them using an old chisel.

There may aslo be a psate type paint stripper on the market, Ronseal used to make one a few years ago, its ok for smaller areas.
