Painting a varnished shelving unit

I recently covered the shelving unit with zinsser 123 as I was informed it pretty much sticks to anything. I want to paint white satin wood acrylic paint over that but as i have some primer undercoat available, I was wondering whether it might be better to give it a couple of coats of that first as i got a feeling the satin wood paint is not going to give me enough coverage with just one coat.Thanks

I just discovered the undercoat primer I have is grey so no good, therefore would i be better off using an undercoat and then satin wood or two coats of satin wood?

If you have used Zinsser 123 then there is no need for any other primer. Just go on with your top coats.

The prupose of primer is to get a surface that paint will stick to. The purpose of undercoat is to create a surface of uniform colour so the top coat doesn't look patchy. Do you have a uniform coloured surface and does your top coat need it?

well i did use an undercoat but it made little difference so i am having to apply 3 coats of top coar
