Recently had a new double-glazed bay window installed with an MDF sill.

The sill needs painting. How do I go about this? Should I sand and seal the edges with a primer?

Also, is it recommended to use full gloss or should I use silk? Or is this just personal preference?

Thanks!

Seal with MDF sealer, rub down & maybe seal again. paint with finish you prefer

Silk?

Surely you mean; gloss, satin wood or eggshell?

I used to specialise in painting MDF cabinets. My technique was-

1. A coat of Leyland acrylic primer (it is cheap and easy to sand back- all waterbased paints cause the mdf fibres to swell).

2. Sand with sterate coat silicone carbide sandpaper (180 grit).

3 Dust off.

4 Apply two coats of dulux trade oil based eggshell (thinning slightly as required) and lightly sanding with 360 paper in between coats.

Decent brushes will make things much easier.
