Hi,
It is usual to put a primer on first and then undercoat.
Without primer, the surface may be less resistant to scratches, if it is in a high traffic area and a black colour is more likely to show up any imperfections in the finish.
But if you don't fancy using a primer, do a test patch and see what happens!
