Hello, I hope somebody will be able to help with our predicament. Some 18 months ago we had a chap from Potterton to look at our boiler. It is a Potterton 'Combi 100' (GC 4739304 if that means anything). The problem then was that it was cutting out. That was resolved by replacing the circuit board. Problem solved.
Immediately afterwards when using the shower (which is a traditional hose attached to the bath taps arrangement) the hot water will last for approximately two minutes before cutting out. The only way we have been able to resolve this is to turn the heating on. The hot water for the shower then runs fine.
We have no problems with hot water through the kitchen tap or for running a bath. Only for a shower. The red light on the board initially comes on for approximately two minutes and the boiler can be seen to light up. Then both cease, and the boiler continues to make its usual running noise for a couple of minutes thereafter.
The engineer said that the problem could not be resolved without putting in a thermostatic shower.
The boiler is located upstairs. Could this be some issue with the pressure? Was the engineer likely correct stating that we need a thermostatic shower, and how would this help? We have hard water and as I was concerned about possible restricted flow and restricted draw on hot water by the shower I have replaced the shower hose and shower head but to no avail.
Can anybody assist? Now we have warmer weather it is ridiculous to turn the heating on every time for a shower. Although we can switch off all the radiators I am worried running it as such may cause damage to the system so I have not done this.
