building regs sugest trvs should be on all rads except were the thermostat is situated. i would sugest you at least use a manual wheel head valve to balance and control your flow temp. a trv should be away from a source of cold air e.g door way, also the opposite applies, not too near a wall or where circulation is at its lowest
If using trv's it is best practice to fit on flow pipe even if they are bi-directional valves, to find flow pipe turn heating on from cold then first pipe to get warm on each rad is flow , i normally leave hall (cos of room stat) and bathroom with out trv ,that is just personal preferance
