I quite fancy some of the Rainguard aluminium downpipes and am wondering whether to pay extra for these compared with the cheaper UPVC alternative that my builder has included in his quote.

Does anyone have any personal experience good/bad with either aluminium, GRP, cast iron or any of the other materials on the market compared with UPVC? I understand you can get UPVC designer ones in the ogee and various other shapes, but would any of you builders personally put this on your own house?

What is the typical cost difference between all of the above materials per metre typically, and what are maintenance requirements?

Also regarding decorative GRP coping, how does this compare with single weathered coping to install on a parapet wall?
