Hi and Ta for the previous advice.

We are on the fourth floor (top floor) block of flats, when we flush the wc or the neighbour below flushes their wc a ratthe is heard from the loft area for about 4 seconds.
There is no drain smell and the wc flushes well.
Is it usual for an air admittance valve to rattle ?
Many thanks !

Donald_diy, good evening.

At least the device appears to be functioning as intended?

Depending on demand some do make a noise?

Question? what make is the device? that may give rise to an answer for you?

If the device is really annoying / intrusive, Etc. then you could consider fitting a sound attenuating shroud around the device?

Ken.

Ken,thank you.
Just found out the aav is behind a boxed in section adjacent to the soil pipe, with no access hatch .
The loft area is at highest point 4 foot so just a void under the mansard roof again with no access .
Happy to put up with the rattle,is the rattle something to do with it opening &closing when thete is suction in the vertical soil pipe ?.
Is on the forth floor (y).
Thanks again

If it's push fit then pull that one off and replace it with a new one, it's probably rattling because the mechanism/spring will have got a little loosen with use/age.

If not then you need someone in to cut that one off and replace with a new one.

Donald_diy, good evening again.

OK No access to "Get at" the device?

What it is doing is to prevent the water from being sucked out of the traps in the various basins and baths, not to mention the Shower and it can happen the WC.

If you consider the following, someone flushes a loo or pulls the plug on a Bath on the floor below you, the escaping water flows into the vertical down pipe, but? behind that "plug" of water there is a partial vacuum which forms in the down pipe.

This low partial vacuum sucks the water from the various traps then you will end up with some nasty smells in the house

Hence the noise emanating from the device.

Hope the above makes sense?

Ken
