I am going to removing the fireplace, mantle piece etc and then bricking up the hole left behind. Leaving the chimney in place. This is going to make a lot of mess is there such a thing as a tent or frame I could put round the fire for me to work inside to keep the soot from going all over the house.

Working inside a tent won't cure the ability of dust to find its way into the rest of the house - dust is a clever little beggar.

Assuming that you are permitted to mess up the room you are working in then may I suggest the following - based on experience.

Get hold of one of those LARGE extractors that are used in pubs etc (about 12" diameter) and fit one into a board that neatly fits into an open window.

Then, with all room doors closed, when you run the fan the room will operate at a slight negative pressure and pull out the dust you create.

Typical bathroom fans 150 or 200mm diameter are no use for the job - it takes a real fan - one strong enough to suck the skin off a rice pudding at 10 paces.

If you can't get hold of one of those the likes of machine mart sell these but they are a bit pricey : http://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/product/details/cam300-portable-ventilator
