hi
quick question, when they do the side of the house (gable end) rendered should the plaster cover the damp proof course, and does it matter? in this case the render covers the damp proof but does not go all the way to the floor, there is about 15 cm. thanks.

It depends on the quality of the render. The outside of my house was rendered to the deck and I could see the dampness was creeping over the DPC, so as a precautionary measure I grooved the render out at the DPC and filled it with SBR reinforced mortar. Two years later the dampness stops at the new DPC barrier.

hello thanks for your kind reply, building work has been done today, it looks great, they have replaced the bottom iron lip, and all the broken bits, but the lip is now below the damp proof and I am a bit worried, I don't like saying any thing. the guy is being paid tomorrow, its not my house but a relatives, I wasn't there when the work was being done, although I did try to say something last week.

the builder has been today and paid £450 he was a little bit irate but assures us the mortar is sbr, which I didn't see being mixed, he has written a receipt stating sbr use.
can we test the cement?
and would black paint underneath be enough to prevent damp and what type should you use? I am Getting a lot of stick for this concern at the moment, but its only because I have seen the damage a dpc breach can cause.

SBR in mortar makes it go bluey grey and leathery!!! :-) It is difficult to render with SBR in the mix as it does not stick very well and tend to slump down the wall. Often the plasticiser in render incorporate a water repellent. Just flick some water on to the mortar with a brush, it should run off and not leave a damp patch.
