We live in a 100 year old house and are in the process of restoring some of its original features. Downstairs there are two sealed up fireplaces that we would very much like to reopen.
Unfortunately this is not as straight forward as it sounds. Our house is built into a lane, which means that the wall containing the fireplaces is effectively underground. This had resulted in a considerable damp problem that was fixed by having a Platon damp proofing system installed along the whole wall, including across the openings of the fireplaces.
We just wanted to know if anyone had come across this sort of problem before and if it is possible to open the fireplaces up and install a traditional coal fire/wood burning stove. Any advice gratefully received. Thanks.

Hi, Arvr,
I'm not conversant with the damp proofing system to which you refer, however you may have other problems to contend with if you want to use the old flues for 'real' fires.
I think the flues will have to be lined, or at least checked for suitability.
The stacks may need some attention also.

also consider if you have a guarantee on the damp proofing that you might not have any come back if you alter the system.
