We have one of those "wooden post" retaining walls between us and the neighbours (their property is a couple of feet higher up the hill than us). The wall is the kind with the round 4" posts hammered vertically into the ground and nailed into each other. It starts about halfway along the front garden and continues down the side of the house - approx 50' in total. Most of the wall is around 24" high, although this reduces to 6" where our front garden slopes upwards to meet next door's.

The house is 16 years old now and the posts are well and truly rotten. I'm looking for suggestions on how to replace them. A brick wall is probably out of the question due to cost, so was thinking of laying sleepers horizontally but I'm not sure how best to anchor them together (and into the ground) for maximum support/strength.
