replacing timber sash windows with upvc, box replacement?

Hi,

I am in the lookout for replacing timber sash windows with upvc ones but I am not 100% sure on what box replacement and box lining replacement are, and if they are needed and/or recommended. Have been having quotes from various people, some mentioning sash box replacement, some mentioning sash line? replacement, some nothing at all and I am not sure what I should be looking for... Thanks in advance
