I have a few small leaks in the roof of my Victorian mid-terrace house; some tiles need replacing, the parapet wall needs rerendering, some coping stones could do with replacing and the chimney stack needs repointing.

Built around 1908, the original construction used lime mortar and I have read that using portland cement on this kind of property is not a good idea because it will crack with any movement and it does not allow the wall to breathe.

Are the people that say this just sticklers or are they right and I should be buying hydrated lime instead or portland cement?
