Might be just my cynical mind but it's Japanese scientists and the Japanese have a long tradition of ivory carving... cloning a mammoth could result in a bumper 'harvest' of ivory!

Japan, Russia see chance to clone mammoth

Scientists from Japan and Russia believe it may be possible to clone a mammoth after finding well-preserved bone marrow in a thigh bone recovered from permafrost soil in Siberia, a report said Saturday.

Teams from the Sakha Republic's mammoth museum and Japan's Kinki University will launch fully-fledged joint research next year aiming to recreate the giant mammal, Japan's Kyodo News reported from Yakutsk, Russia.

By replacing the nuclei of egg cells from an elephant with those taken from the mammoth's marrow cells, embryos with mammoth DNA can be produced, Kyodo said, citing the researchers.

The scientists will then plant the embryos into elephant wombs for delivery, as the two species are close relatives, the report said.

Securing nuclei with an undamaged gene is essential for the nucleus transplantation technique, it said.

For scientists involved in the research since the late 1990s, finding nuclei with undamaged mammoth genes has been a challenge. Mammoths became extinct about 10,000 years ago.

But the discovery in August of the well-preserved thigh bone in Siberia has increased the chances of a successful cloning.

Global warming has thawed ground in eastern Russia that is usually almost permanently frozen, leading to the discoveries of a number of frozen mammoths, the report said.

It's all very well bringing the mammoths back to life. But who's going to clean up all the mammoth sh*t? They haven't thought it through.

Im concerned... it's Sunday. IMAM will have many points to disucuss in an hour or so. No slight on you IMAM, just holding back for now ;)

It's only a matter of time before we allow these mammoths to come to our shores and use our NHS for free, even though they've contributed nothing. Send them back, that's what I say

Remember watching a documentary several years ago which included the marvellous fact that mammoth bones had been found in the North Sea, which was evidence that the area was once upon a time - dry land.

That was just before the last Ice Age. There are loads of tree stumps still down there.

That or Mammoths were actually sea dwellers! Thinking about it, that trunk could make a really good snorkel!

The order Sirenia are the manatees, sea cows, dugongs, and their relatives. It has been suggested that the early ancestors of the Hyracoidean/Sirenian/Proboscidian group were semi-aquatic, and that the distinctive trunk of proboscidians (from which the group gets its name) evolved as a snorkel. That wouldn’t be too surprising, because modern elephants are excellent swimmers and have been seen swimming more than 20 miles at sea, using their trunks as snorkels. If this hypothesis is correct, then the elephant’s trunk is a “primitive” feature that has been retained by elephants, and lost in Hyracoideans and Sirenians.
