Whenever I pull the flush, I hear a fog horn noise after a while. I asked a plumber to pop round and he did some work but the noise is back. Any ideas? It's difficult to call him or anyone out due to the current virus scenario.

Sometimes shutting down isolation valve to the fill valve slightly (if fitted) helps until you can get somebody in.

Paid 60 quid to that plumber to initially fix the problem... I can't figure out what he fixed then?

I will give you all a laugh at my bodge skills.

15+ years ago ours was making that same stupid fog horn sound. It seemed to have something to do with the ball being too big and pressing against the sides of the cistern, not that the noise was coming from the ball rubbing but the displaced and lateral sideways pressure on the valve was causing the noise.

I can't remember if the original snapped off as I tried to bend it, but whatever, I temporarily fashioned a new one until I had time to buy a replacement.

15 years on and it is still working properly - may as well leave well alone now!

empty multi vitamin bottle, gaffer tape, cable ties and a thin steel rod (may be off a clothes airer?) and some hot melt glue.

Interestingly the steel rod was attached to the original plastic valve with Hot-Melt glue and cable ties. 15 years in a wet (but not submerged) environment it is still holding firm
Gaffa tape seems pretty good too (but starting to come away a bit).

As to the noise - as I said it no longer makes any noise, but as a test this morning, I put a little sideways (forward) pressure on the ball cock as it fills, and the fog horn comes back
