Simple, cheap ventilation options?

the hatch hangs at head level in the hall between all the bedrooms - not sure how long that would last before somebody walks into it in the middle of the night! Anyway, we seem to be coping better with the heat, and I am skint, so I'll probably just forget about the whole idea now!

Same here, is it a modern plastic one with the thumbturn?

Push it back a bit more than the vertical it hangs at, then lift, it will detach completely.
