Somewhat flakey behaviour of a BT Freelance XD 1100

Hi there,
When we installed Broadband about a year ago I signed up for the "use it all you want and it won't cost a penny (except rental etc) " option for a digital phone to offer a second line.We got a pair of BT Freelance XD 1100s. Everything works but after about a couple of minutes the phone quite reliably goes dead as far as my speech is concerned - though I can still hear the other party until he or she hangs up in despair. As can be imagined, I tend not to use it for calls out. Anyone any idea?
