Stairs/skirting transition help

Evening all,

Looking for a bit of advice, currently decorating the hallway/stairs area in our house, however since we moved in I have always had a problem with how the transition from the skirting to the stairs looks and don’t really know how to go about making it look better, the main issue being the plasterboard not being level against the wall top and bottom so it gives the illusion of the stair stringer tapering in at the top and bottom of the stairs, I don’t have the budget to re board the stair wall, as much as I would like to! Is there any other way I could make this look a bit less unsightly?

Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated!

Can you post some wider, overall view pics, to give some sort of context. It's difficult to work out what we're looking at here.

Sorry I tried to upload some better pictures but they won’t upload for some reason, the first two images are where the skirting at the top of the stairs meets the stringer, the other image is at the bottom of the stairs where the skirting meets the stringer, hope that makes a bit more sense.

Sorry, I still can't really work out what's going on.

In the photo below, I would shape a piece of timber to fit the area I have circled in red, fix in place, and fill any small gaps, and paint.

Cut back the skirting a half metre or so and scarf in a new piece, mitred, shaped to continue all the way to meet the stair stringer. If the skirting is thicker or sticks out further than the thickness of the stringer then just plane the last bit, 3 or 4 inches, to taper into the thinner section.

Thanks for the suggestion, I’ll do that, it seems the most logical way to do it, appreciate the help!
