It will be money well spent if they show the drain is under next doors property.

Have you shopped around? If you got a price from elsewhere you could say 'And that includes trace and probe, yeah?', they may just say 'yeah'.

I know nothing, but....

If you're lucky it will be a dead straight line between the two manholes, and a light (laser etc.) will confirm that. Then a surface survey between the two manholes will accurately show the route. Even a taut bit of string would be sufficient.

I am fortunate enough to know that the drain is a straight line from manhole to manhole, but there are unfortunately obstructions restricting me from determining the exact location and map scalings are too vague due to Thames Water not knowing the exact location.
