Or in this case the depth of loft insulation.

Have just started renewing insulation in loft. By laying 170mm over existing, worn insulation, this brings it up to about 220mm and just above joist level.

If I add another layer at right angles would I be able to get thinner insulation to bring up to 270mm?

Am just worried about throwing another standard size which would be too big. Can it be too big?.

Also very springy at moment so may settle down and then more straightforward job in adding second layer.

Thanks for your time.

Very helpful and informative response. I didn't think this specific strand had been covered but will check. That said how would one narrow down criteria?

Loft insulation/laying over existing/height somewhere between 200-220mm
:D

I think the 270mm figure is minimum rather than an exact thickness that needs to be up there so in relation to your " can it be too big?" question then I'd say no . Just make sure the roof timbers have ventilation and you could put six feet of insulation up there for what it's worth.
