Toilet handle fitments

I’ve ordered a new similar handle to replace a broken handle and unfortunately the thickness of the new is wider.

See below the universal chrome handle the replacement one and the original.

The original is 17-18mm thick. Anyone know where I can source?

3/8s = 9mm? Too small, or will it be clamped in? Im not doing the job my plumber is, just finding the part..
