Thats why I said fit four cleats to the underside, both to pull it flat and give some strength.

I would leave about 5mm uncut and use a CMT ITK (industrial thin kerf) or De Walt thin kerf blade and run half a dozen kerfs at 50mm cts.

You could also glass over it when kerfed, and cleated, that would help it maintain its straight shape.

Thanks for your replies. Wickerman, I reckon you're right - in fact the thickness is probably only 20mm max. I've got another bench that has a 35mm seat on it and it's absolutely fine. So, I think the best policy is to replace the seat and hope the the wood stays flat this time. I was thinking of using a thicker piece and rebating the edges so it would sit at the same level - if you see what I mean.

Still, I've now learnt what kerf cuts are.
