as an update
I tried an old waste I had on the sink connection to see if that tightened up OK and it did - whereas the current unit - clicks at the top and then offset
so i purchased a new waste from screwfix and fitted and it at least tightens and stays tight - so some paper towel around all the joints and we wait and see if fully water tight
