Part of the central heating system in our bungalow is a vertical pipe, not quite at the highest point of the system (it is below the header tank) with a brass/bronze 'gismo', 'thingy' or whatever at the top. This device is about 4" high by 1.5" diameter with a Schrader (car tyre) type valve at the top of it.

What is it's function, and how can I check if it performing correctly? With a Schrader valve at the top I would expect it to allow air (or liquid) in rather than out.

Any experts out there please help.

it sounds like an auto bleed valve they are put into the system at high points to prevent air locks. just make sure the little screw cap is open about a quarter of a turn and the thing isnt leaking.
