What is this box in our bathroom - and can we remove it?

Hi,

We want to remove this wire and terminal in our bathroom - but we have no idea what it is!

See the photos attached. It is screwed into the top of a wooden wall-mounted bathroom cabinet - but isn't wired into anything at all and doesn't serve a purpose from what I can see.

Does anyone know if we can safely remove it / what it is?

Its a junction box, something was or intended to be connected to it, possibly a light.
It is likely the cable is live now or becomes live possibly when a switch is activated. Investigation needed to find were it comes from
 
I reckon there was a lovely shiny illuminated/heated mirror/cabinet. When the original owners moved out, they took it, putting a tatty wooden one back? It's most likely still live and would need disconnecting at source.
