what sand for render ?

What's best to use soft sand or sharp sand for rendering a wall ?
 
roughcaster....you ARE the man !!!! All the info I need, great !!!!
 
he is! ;-)

and make sure it is washed!! i had some plastering sand from a merchant last year that had over 20% silt in it :shock: , 10% is the recommended maximum, caused small cracks, no big deal but it's taught me to do a quick silt test from now on.
 
My builders merchant, inter-line today said they only have soft sand and 50/50 which they say is the one normally used for rendering. Is this right ? what is meant by 50/50 sand ?
 
50/50 soft plastering sand/sharp sand is ok too,,, no problem. Never sharp sand on it's own for rendering,,,, that's for screeding floors etc.
