Despite leaving the cylinder full of water and being careful, I have buckled the area around the immersion element. The element was really seized, and the cyl. has to be replaced.

What can I put on the thread of the new element to stop it seizing in future?

If it was on my car, I would put a smear of copper grease on the thread, is this permitted on domestic water situations? I'm thinking not!

jointing compound on washer but never the thread.
and at the risk of being pilloried, unless you intend to drink the hot water, then...

p.s always loosen and fully tighten immersion bosses etc with cylinders full. pressure exerted stiffens the body of the cylinder

Like pump valves, always use heat before even trying to loosen. My old journeyman showed me that when I started my time in the 70s. Never damaged a cylinder yet or failed to get a circulation pump out.

I always use a little neutral cure silicone on washer, never leaks , always comes out easy and if its vented who wants to drink that anyway, even unvented lay gunge in the bottom after a while :-(.
