What's this brown fuzz in my chimney?

Hi,

I've emailed some pictures to admin so they should follow soon....

I have removed the stone clad fire surround and old gas appliance from the chimney breast in my front room. in the void behind the appliance is some brown spongey stuff coating up the inside walls and on the floor of the void. What the heck could it be?

PS: the previous owner smiked in the room, so tobacco staining could account for the brown colour?

sounds to me like it might be very old foam filler but without a pic im guessing
