I'm a newbie and this is my first post!

I live in a Victorian 2 up and 2 down built around 1875. I plan on renovating the back room and originally I wanted to put in a Victorian cast iron range in the chimney breast as I assumed one would have been there before hand.

So far, I have removed the plaster to a width of 125cm and a height of 158cm to reveal just bricks and no lintle!

Also the bricks on both sides are four rows deep so this has put some doubt in my mind that a range was there previously. However, I have pulled out a Victorian cast iron door (measuring 35cm width by 80cm height) that was put up in the flue.

I've attached a photo showing the detail of the plaster that I've removed. I'm not sure if I'd be able to put a cast iron range there or perhaps only a Victorian fire? Would now be the right time to contact a chimney sweep or a builder for advice??

Thanks in advance. Andrew

Only a fire will go in there ;) . I stood @ an auction last Tuesday and a nice cast iron one with tiled sides that would have fitted a treat went for about £80. Then there are the Salvage yards - I`d get a sweep to have a look now , and get the flue cleaned and some advice too. Good Luck.

Looks like the old arch was removed and some rebuilding above. I can't quite make out what is holding up the brickwork. Could be a piece of asbestos.

Thanks for your replies. Much appreciated.

Bit gutted that a range won't be able to go there grrr... alas a nice cast iron Victorian fireplace will have to do!!

Will contact a sweep asap for advice. Cheers, Andrew

Thanks for that, I may take a few more cm off while waiting for a chimney sweep to come out.

Hi

There's nothing to stop you widening the opening if you so wish!

Going by the picture you could lose say 1 brick from each side, which would give you an additional 18" (450mm) to play with. Will obviously need a new supporting lintel.

Regards

that's great to know. Thanks alot... it's giving me more options. I've got my heart set on a range so I'll see what I can do.

Cheers, Andrew
