whirlpool not draining

i have a whirlpool dishwasher that is not draining. it\\\'s cleaning ok but when it gets to the drying cycle, the heating elements are partially submerged. i disconnected the hose at the disposal, ran the unit and saw it was draining some water. i checked the screen in the floor of the dishwasher and did not find anything blocking it. can something have gotten through and clogged the impeller? any recommendations?
