I have recently noticed a whistling for the first 5-10 minutes following the central heating coming on. It then settles down and does not re-occur until the next switch on............Just before this started I was in the loft and fell catching the aerial cable which pulled round the pipe that feeds into the heating header tank..(I know, it was like my own Ealing comedy!). Any thoughts on why this has caused the whistling?

You may have disturbed your float valve from normal operation. Could be limescale stopping float valve fully closing.
Clean out and reset level of water slightly if needed. :D

You might have shaken up the F&E tank, and dislodged some c**p which has now lodged in your pump, causing a mechanical whistle-type noise....
