Why is my (bath waste rust stained) ? (Ed.)

Bought the house a few months. I had a leak last month (plug had the wrong sized screw) so emergency plumber etc as a bath dripped into my living room via a light fitting.

So plumber fix and not it is looking like this with the screw rusting. Did he cock up or is it all good cos I am having the ceiling plastered after the leak and could really do without doing this *******s all over again.

Iirc those screws are usually brass or stainless steel. Maybe an abrasive cleaner has been used? As it’s before the screw too.

Bleach based cleaner in the bathroom will affect chrome.

Not imo. Not to where it isn’t located and if we zoom in looks scratched.

That’s a hard one to answer, seen loads like it that have lasted years. As for what to do, up to you, either replace or if it ain’t broken, don’t fix it.

He's used any machine screw he could find to repair the waste at the time and it's mild steel. It should be chrome covered brass or stainless steel.

Get a new bath waste and get that fitted, they like only a few £'s

Yes, poor practice by the plumber. He couldn't be bothered to get a proper chrome plated brass, or stainless steel, screw and just used a mild steel one he had rolling around in his tool box.

So realistically how long will it last and does it need replacing?

It will last a fair time but it will just keep rusting and may eventually stain the bath. The longer it's left the harder it will be to replace as the rust progresses and it seizes/expands into the waste section below. Best to change it sooner rather than later.
