Windows crash log?

My PC restarted, it issued a message which started

"windows...restart...error...appears to have been caused by..." but it was gone before I had time to read it. Is there a log anywhere to give a clue to the problem?

Depending on the nature of the crash/restart, you could look in the event viewer to see if any events were logged. Dump files (.dmp) are also created in %systemroot%\minidump.

Both are often difficult to read, but you could use a utility such as Whocrashed to provide a degree of analysis of drivers which may be causing issues.

You can also disable auto restart so that if it happens again you can read the error description before restarting manually http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic74644.html
